Jon Bowes' Portfolio

This section will always be a work in progress as I complete more projects and gain permission to showcase them on this site. I've started off with a small selection, but expect this area to grow. If I've built a site for you that you would like me to showcase, then why not get in touch and give me a hurry up!

Cupboard Love is an example of a brochure site for a company who refurbish your kitchen for a considerable saving over replacing it. The specification was to create a clean, approachable site that was both visually pleasing and also search engine friendly. It also contains a Flash virtual showroom which customers have reported to be hugely beneficial.

This site has dominated my time over the last couple of years. It is built entirely using PHP and MySQL. This site gave me an excellent opportunity to cover a huge range of different projects within one. Most of the advanced PHP code is contained within the password protected backend, however, I am able to demonstrate the facilities and functionality on request. Most of the quote engines were also written by me (such as the caravan and liability engines) and I was able to make use of AJAX to provide a slicker user interface to the customer. There was a continuous battle between making the site quick and easy to use, yet working within the requirements and legislation set out by both the FSA and the company Directors. There was also a strong focus on security, scalability and resilience, as we planned for the site to turn into a high traffic site. These targets were met and exceeded and the company continues to grow and attract more customers through the website.

I originally built this site around 7 years ago using PHP4 with a MySQL3 database. It's a great example of a site that was built to last, as it has required almost no updates at all and is still functioning well for the client. It is only now being upgraded to take advantage of the speed and flexibility afforded by moving to a PHP5 and MySQL5 platform.
